Tonight my wife, bandmates and other friends went up the road to hear Katie Noonan and her band, The Captains perform music off their up-coming album, Peace is my Drug.
It was super-refreshing to hear beautiful, eclectic music being performed in an honest and authentic way – to an appreciative audience.
Katie’s songwriting was interesting (in the best kind of way), breaking way from traditional forms and melodic structures, taking us on a journey into an etherial musical encounter.
I was a little concerned, at the start of the set, as I noticed the lack of a (traditional) bass (double or electric), but I did not at all miss the instrument throughout the performance thanks to keyboard (playing the bass part) of Stu Hunter, split to a bass (Ampeg) cabinet and guitar amp (VOX AC30, I think).
I loved the guitar playing (Ben Edgar) which really made me miss the pop-effect-style-interesting-chord playing and melodic drumming (Declan Kelly). All contributed to an ensemble that was tight, sonically balanced and emotionally moving.
Katie (and the Captains), thanks for re-inspiring this tired (not so old) dude.
